What does air freight cost?

The question “how much does air freight cost” is perhaps one of our most frequently asked questions. Logically, because if you are going to send goods, you naturally want insight into the rates. The costs for transport by cargo plane depend on various factors. The final destination, the goods, transit times (degree of urgency) and the volumetric weight are factors that influence the rates. We will explain the factors below.

The place of destination

The rates for transporting goods are primarily determined by the destination. As a rule, popular destinations are cheaper than lesser-known destinations. The distance between the different airports also plays a role, of course.

The type of transport also plays a role. Most air freight shipments are shipped “airport-to-airport”. This means that the goods are delivered to the airport. However, it is also an option to transport goods further inland. Your transport will then be transported to its destination by truck, boat or train. This is also called “door-to-door”. The rates for such destinations are generally higher than if the goods are delivered to the airport.

The type of goods

Solid or liquid general cargo that can be transported in containers, boxes or crates falls under the heading “general cargo”. This type of goods falls under one tariff. In addition, there are also exceptional goods such as dangerous substances and foodstuffs. Different rates apply for the transport of these goods. Customs can determine the type of goods based on an HS code.

The desired transport time

Although most airlines fly to fixed airports, a stopover may be necessary. This may cause a delay, causing transit times to extend. This is because in that case a shipment is transported with two or sometimes more aircraft. In some cases it is desirable that goods are transported to the correct destination as quickly as possible. Different rates often apply to direct deliveries. This also guarantees a fast transport time.

The volumetric weight

When calculating air freight costs, we are often asked “What is the volumetric weight?” This is a combination of volume and weight of the goods. The rates are not calculated per kilo. For air freight, each cubic meter is taxed with a minimum of 166,67 kilograms. As a result, not only weight but also volume plays a role in calculating rates.

The volumetric weight determines the density of the goods to be transported. It can be thought of as the amount of space a package, box or pallet takes up compared to its weight.

How is the volumetric weight calculated?

The volume weight of a shipment can be calculated based on a fixed formula:

  • Length x width x height (in cm): 5000*

*If it concerns a general cargo transport, the volume can be divided by 6000.
