Which goods are classified as hazardous substances? 

Dangerous goods can range from chemicals and flammable materials to explosives and radioactive materials. Examples include flammable liquids, toxic substances, and even lithium batteries. When transporting these goods, it is important to understand the classifications to ensure safe and compliant transport.

  1. Explosive substances and objects (Class 1): fireworks, ammunition to explosives for industrial use.
  2. Gases (Class 2): compressed gases, liquefied gas and dissolved gas. Examples are propane, oxygen and chlorine gas. 
  3. Flammable liquids (Class 3): These are liquids that are flammable at certain temperatures and conditions. Gasoline, diesel and alcohol are some examples.
  4. Flammable solids (Class 4): substances that ignite and burn easily, such as sulphur, phosphorus and magnesium. 
  5. Self-reactive substances and substances that emit flammable gases in contact with water (Class 4.1): Examples are sodium and calcium carbide. 
  6. Toxic substances (Class 6): substances that are harmful to health by inhalation, ingestion or contact with the skin. Examples include pesticides, acids and certain medications.
  7. Radioactive materials (Class 7): materials with a radioactive character, such as uranium and plutonium. 
  8. Corrosive substances (Class 8): substances that can cause damage to living tissue or other materials on contact, such as acids and alkalis.
  9. Miscellaneous hazardous substances (Class 9): substances and objects that may pose a hazard during transport but do not fall under the other classes. Examples include lithium batteries, magnetic materials and asbestos.
